The Right of the Church to Proclaim the Truth

His Grace, the Most Reverend Leonardo Z. Legazpi, O.P. wrote a pastoral letter on the role of the church in public life. Here is an excerpt from the pastoral letter the full text can be read at this link.

"The teachings of the Church concerning prevailing social issues that affect people are not merely limited to renunciation of immoral acts, but in a more positive light, these teachings seek to form and illumine our conscience to enable us to choose the good and to genuinely decide in accordance with what is true.[18] In this sense, the Church is a vital contributor in the political debate, a transformative resource[19] insofar as she helps in purifying and shedding light upon the application of reason to the discovery of objective moral principles.[20] Ultimately, the right and duty of the Church to speak about the Truth and to form conscience in the Truth is rooted not so much in her doctrinal statements and pastoral letters but in her fidelity in following Jesus.[21]"

I am a…..13 year-old boy in 1983, but now I am in my early 40s, gaining weight and getting older, but younger at heart. I consider myself as a “novus ordo baby”. By that I mean … I was born in the late 60s and grew up confronted by the changes as a result of the reforms by Vatican II. Like my generation I never saw what the church was like in 1962 prior to the council, but I witness the gradual disappearance of religious traditions and devotions. Young as I was in the decades of the 70s and 80s I could not understand what was going on. But I suffered the sense of loss as I saw how the modernizing influence in the church disfigured the liturgy and clouded the way we believe and worship. But then being a child and powerless, not knowing what it was, and why it happened, I simply drifted into the sea of my religious life, too young to understand. With a glimmer of faith in my heart, planted by baptism, strengthened by the sound teachings of my parents and grandparents and the grace afforded by the sacrament of confirmation, I sailed into the sea of life, day after day, seeing the changes happen, feeling the sense of abandonment, yet God was merciful to me. In 2005 I discovered the Traditional Latin Mass or commonly known in the post-conciliar period as the Tridentine Mass. I began to love the rite of mass that has nourished my ancestors, the saints and the martyrs. I am eternally grateful to His Holiness Pope John Paul II for recognizing the rightful aspirations of Catholics attached to the ancient forms of the Roman Rite through his apostolic letter ECCLESIA DEI DI AFFLICTA. I am also eternally grateful to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI for liberating the Traditional Latin Mass through his apostolic letter Summorum Pontificum. I fully agree with the program of his pontificate regarding the Hermeneutics of Continuity and disdain the hermeneutics of rupture. Today I consider myself a Traditional Roman Catholic attached to the liturgical discipline of 1962 as outlined in the Motu Proprio SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM of his Holiness. My voyage is on. Join me in this quest.

My Views on the Traditional Latin Mass

I am a “traditional” Roman Catholic; as such I am intimately attached to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (a.k.a. Tridentine Mass & the Sacraments according to the 1962 rites). My attachment to the Old Mass is not of nostalgia since I was born and raised in the Novus Ordo, but because the Old Rite of Mass expresses the fullness of the Catholic Faith and the Sacrificial Nature of the Mass. This Rite brings me closer to Calvary with Mary and John and with the penitent thief, in silent prayer, adoration and thanksgiving for such a great sacrifice-the power and pledge of salvation.
